Babcock & Wilcox Co. will announce plans for a new mini-nuclear power plant,
capable of producing about a 10th of the power of other proposed new reactor designs,
a person familiar with the announcement said. Babcock, a maker of power-plant
parts and subsidiary of Houston-based McDermott International Inc., will make
the announcement at a press conference in Washington today, according to the person,
who asked not to be identified because the news wasn't public yet. The reactor
would be capable of generating about 125 megawatts, enough power for about 100,000
typical U.S. homes. Other new reactors proposed for the U.S. generate about 1,100
megawatts of electricity. Other companies, including Toshiba Corp. and Hyperion
Power Generation, also have plans for mini reactors.
