Nuclear is not all good things
The Ottawa Citizen: Hugh Robertson - March 31, 2008
Re: Rehabilitating nuclear, March 20.
Nuclear power is a "terrifying thing," not "was," according to this editorial. It is terrifying because of potential accidents, nuclear waste and the financial costs that it imposes on future generations.
Communities, such as Nanticoke, have no moral right to "rightly believe that a nuclear plant in the neighbourhood would translate into hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars for the local economy." To commit unborn generations to tonnes of toxic radioactive waste and millions of dollars of debt, all for short-term political and economic gain, is unconscionable.
Contrary to your editorial point of view, cultural -- and moral -- attitudes appear to be firmly cast in stone.
