INFORMATION ON RELEASE OF WATER TO LAKE ONTARIO AT DARLINGTON NUCLEAR STATION (OPG)

Toronto – Earlier today Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington Nuclear station had an inadvertent release of demineralized light water containing tritium and hydrazine to the environment, including some drainage into the lake.

Environment and operations staff are currently measuring the levels of these two substances in the released water. Concurrently, a collection effort is underway to recover as much of the water as possible from the station.

Following OPG Nuclear procedures, the Ministry of Environment, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and Region of Durham Water Treatment plants, and other appropriate agencies, were notified. OPG will continue to work closely with these agencies and keep the public and community notified.

All four units at the Darlington station continue to operate at or near full power.
